Due to the significant changes made in IPv6 and the complexity of the new address format, the roll out of of the new internet protocol has been slow and not all organizations are ready to roll it out at the same time.  A number of transition technologies to ensure a smooth deployment from IPv4 to IPv6 has been developed to assist with the roll out.

IPv4 Compatible IPv6 Address is one such transition technology.  It enables IPv6 devices to communicate through IPv4 connected networks by embedding IPv4 address in its IPv6 address which can later be extracted by IPv4 routers to route through IPv4 networks.  This type of IPv4 Compatible IPv6 Address has a special format with the first 96 bits set to all zeros followed by a dotted decimal IPv4 address as illustrated below.
